Sumpter Robert Snipes, Jr. Article from the Feb 18, 1943 edition of the Laurinburg (NC) Exchange: "CORPORAL SNIPES AT HOME ON FURLOUGH Corporal S.R. Snipes, Jr., of the U.S. Marines is spending a 15-day furlough here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S.R. Snipes. Cpl. Snipes has been in the Marine service for nearly three years, and since September of last year has been in the Pacific war theater. His ship was torpedoed at Guadalcanal and a number of the men were lost. Cpl. Snipes escaped serious injury and was sent to Sidney, Australia, where he spent some time. Lately he returned to the United States and after a visit home here will go to Norfolk and the Marine Base at Quantico, VA, for further active duty."
